Off-grid system planning
Choose by load, voltage, runtime, and recharge—not the biggest number
On the Torven products compared here, 5kW, 8kW, and 10kW describe inverter-output classes. They do not tell you the solar-array size, battery energy, runtime, or everything included in the package. Compare those facts separately, then verify the exact current kit before ordering.

Separate inverter kW, solar-array kW, and battery kWh
These measurements answer different questions. Keeping them separate prevents the most common off-grid kit comparison mistake.
Inverter output (kW)
Describes how much AC power the exact inverter can supply at one time under its documented conditions.
Buyer question: Which loads may run together, and what startup surge must the system handle?
Solar-array rating (kW)
Describes the combined nameplate rating of the panels under standardized test conditions—not guaranteed production at your site.
Buyer question: Can the array and site support the seasonal recharge target within the equipment limits?
Battery energy (kWh)
Describes stored energy. Usable energy and real runtime still depend on the exact battery limits, reserve, temperature, conversion losses, and load profile.
Buyer question: How long must selected loads operate before dependable charging returns?
Direct answer: a 10kW kit does not necessarily include 10kW of solar panels or provide more runtime than every smaller-inverter package. The class number and the other system measurements must be compared as separate fields.
Load-first method
Answer five questions before choosing a class
Square footage alone cannot answer these questions. Two similar-size buildings can have very different pumps, heating, cooling, cooking, workshop, or well loads.
- What may run at the same time?List the realistic group of continuous loads that must operate together, not every nameplate watt added into one unlikely total.
- What has the largest startup surge?Use exact equipment documentation for motors, compressors, pumps, and other loads that can briefly demand more power when starting.
- Does the site need 120V only or 120/240V?Record every required voltage and phase. Confirm that the exact inverter and system design support them; do not assume the kW class answers this. If DC system voltage is also part of the comparison, review the separate 24V vs 48V inverter guide; it does not determine AC phase.
- How much battery-backed time is required?Define essential loads, desired duration, reserve, and the conditions in which charging may be limited.
- How quickly must the battery be recharged?Consider seasonal solar resource, shade, orientation, temperature, array space, generator plans, and the exact equipment's input limits.
Selection rule: evaluate the smallest inverter class that can satisfy the verified simultaneous load, surge, voltage, runtime, and recharge requirements with appropriate design margin. “Bigger” is not automatically a better-balanced system.
Decision comparison
When each inverter class deserves a closer look
This table is a screening tool, not a final system design. Follow each product link for current package options, then verify the current bill of materials and revision-matched manuals.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Class and product path | Evaluate this class when | The class number does not prove | What to verify before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| SunGoldPower SGR-5KE 5kW kit | Your verified simultaneous-load plan points toward the 5kW class, and the exact inverter's surge and voltage/phase limits match the project. | Array size, battery energy, runtime, daily production, installation completeness, or current included components. |
450W panel update Six 450W bifacial panels confirmed September 10, 2026. Confirm the exact panel model and matching kit documents before ordering. |
| SunGoldPower SGR-8K10E 8kW kit | Your verified plan needs more simultaneous-output headroom than the smaller class, and the exact model satisfies the project's surge and voltage/phase requirements. | Longer runtime, faster recharge, a specific appliance list, installation completeness, or current included components. |
450W panel update Eight 450W bifacial panels confirmed September 10, 2026, for the two-SG48100P configuration. Confirm the exact panel model and matching kit documents before ordering. |
| SunGoldPower SGR-10K32P 10kW kit | Your verified plan requires still more simultaneous-output capacity, and the exact 10kW option satisfies the project's surge, voltage/phase, battery, and solar-input requirements. | That every load can run together, whole-property coverage, a particular runtime, or a universal plug-and-play installation. |
Confirm the current package Confirm the exact current kit option, bill of materials, product listing, and revision-matched manuals before relying on model-specific component figures. |
What the panel update means: The confirmed quantities are six 450W bifacial panels for the SGR-5KE and eight for the SGR-8K10E. The exact panel model, current datasheet, and updated kit diagrams remain unverified. Do not use older 415W diagrams or panel wattage alone for string design, conductor selection, protection selection, or installation instructions. Both 450W kit offers were reported delayed on September 10, 2026, with no confirmed dispatch date; check current timing before ordering.
Evaluate 5kW
When the verified simultaneous-load profile is lower and the exact model's surge and AC-output configuration fit the project.
Evaluate 8kW
When the verified load profile needs more concurrent power and the exact model meets the site's voltage and phase requirements.
Evaluate 10kW
When the verified load profile needs still more concurrent output and the complete battery, solar-input, and installation design supports it.
Balance the system
A larger inverter does not guarantee longer runtime or faster recharge
Runtime depends on the energy side
Battery-backed time depends primarily on usable battery energy and the average loads being served. Reserve settings, conversion losses, temperature, equipment limits, and battery condition also matter. For a deeper battery-energy handoff, review how home battery kWh is planned.
A larger inverter can support more simultaneous power, but it can also allow a larger load to drain the same battery more quickly.
Recharge depends on the input side
Recharge performance depends on the verified array, equipment input limits, weather, shade, temperature, orientation, seasonal solar resource, and other approved charging sources.
A higher inverter-output class does not automatically mean a larger array or a shorter recharge window.
For a broader explanation, learn how panels, batteries, and inverters work together. Use site-specific modeling and qualified design review before relying on an expected production or runtime figure.
Before ordering
Check what the exact package includes—and what the site still needs
A product called a “kit” can simplify equipment selection, but the word does not prove that every part, service, or approval required at a specific property is included.
Verify in the exact current package
- Inverter brand, model, region, and current manual
- Battery model, quantity, configuration, and current limits
- Panel model, quantity, rating, and revision
- Any listed cables, protection devices, brackets, communications equipment, or accessories
- Component warranties and the party responsible for each warranty
- Freight, unloading, and delivery requirements shown for the current order
Confirm separately for the site
- Racking, attachment method, roof or ground conditions, and structural review
- Grounding, conduit, disconnects, protection, service equipment, and transfer equipment
- String design and compatibility with the exact environmental conditions
- Engineering, permits, inspections, utility or authority requirements
- Equipment handling, installation labor, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance
Bring Torven a better question: share your load list, largest documented startup surge, required AC voltage/phase, desired battery-backed duration, recharge goal, site constraints, and existing equipment. Torven can help narrow the product path; final system design and installation still require qualified review. Use the System Planning Worksheet to organize these details before contacting us.
Direct answers
5kW vs 8kW vs 10kW off-grid kit FAQ
What do 5kW, 8kW, and 10kW mean on these kits?
For the Torven products compared here, the number describes the inverter's rated continuous AC-output class. It does not state the solar-array rating, battery energy, runtime, or every item included in the package. Verify the exact current SKU, bill of materials, and manuals before using a model-specific number in a design.
Which off-grid solar kit size is best?
There is no universally best class. Start with the loads that may run together, the largest documented startup surge, required voltage and phase, desired battery-backed time, seasonal recharge target, and exact site constraints. The smallest class that satisfies the verified design may be a better fit than simply selecting the largest inverter.
Does a 10kW kit include 10kW of solar panels?
Not necessarily. A 10kW kit name can describe inverter output while the included solar array has a different rating. Compare inverter kW, solar-array kW, and battery kWh as separate fields on the exact current product and its revision-matched manuals.
Does a bigger inverter provide longer runtime?
Not by itself. Runtime depends primarily on usable battery energy and average load, along with reserve settings, conversion losses, temperature, equipment limits, and battery condition. A larger inverter can support more simultaneous power but can also allow the same battery to be depleted more quickly.
Can I choose a kit from house or cabin square footage?
No reliable choice comes from square footage alone. Similar-size buildings can have very different pumps, heating, cooling, cooking, workshop, and well loads. Build a load list, then verify surge, voltage, phase, runtime, recharge, and site requirements.
Why do some sources say 415W panels and others say 450W?
SunGoldPower confirmed a switch to 450W bifacial panels on September 10, 2026: six for the SGR-5KE and eight for the SGR-8K10E. The linked Torven product pages still show the earlier 415W revision, as do the older diagrams. The new panel model, datasheet, and matching kit documents still need verification before relying on electrical specifications or wiring details.
Are these packages ready for every installation?
No. The exact package may contain core equipment and selected accessories, while the property may still need site-specific racking, grounding, conduit, disconnects, protection, service or transfer equipment, engineering, permits, unloading, labor, and commissioning. Verify every item separately.
Where should I go after making a load list?
Use the Torven Power Planner to organize the project, compare the current off-grid solar kits, and then ask Torven Power about pre-purchase fit. For cable planning, read why inverter-cable sizing is model-specific.
