VICTRON ENERGY

Buck-Boost 100A DC-DC Converter

Build a controlled charging path from a compatible 12V or 24V alternator to an auxiliary battery. The Victron 100A Buck-Boost combines adjustable voltage, input and charging-current limits, and engine-running detection for a properly designed dual-battery installation.

Charge an auxiliary bank from a smart alternator

Smart alternators can produce voltage that rises and falls with vehicle operating conditions. A Buck-Boost converter can raise or lower the DC voltage to the configured charging voltage, helping the installer match that source to a compatible service battery. It can be configured for suitable 12V and 24V source/battery combinations rather than requiring identical voltages on both sides.

Check input and output voltage together

The specified input range is 10–30V DC, with an adjustable 10–30V DC output. Select the output setting from the battery manufacturer’s requirements and verify the available source throughout operation. This converter supplies DC power; it does not produce household AC or connect directly to a solar panel as an MPPT solar charge controller.

Size current for the actual conversion

The maximum charging-current specifications are 100A for a 12V output and 50A for a 24V output. The manual separately lists a default 12V-to-24V charging value of 50A for this model. The headline 100A name is not a promise of that current at every voltage combination. Source voltage, input-current limit, configured output current and temperature determine what the installation can deliver.

Protect the charging source with appropriate settings

Input-current and charging-current limits let the installer match charging demand to the alternator and battery system. Account for the vehicle’s other electrical loads and the alternator’s available continuous capacity. Correct current settings work together with suitable main cables, fuses and connections; they do not compensate for an undersized alternator or wiring.

Configure using the intended PC software

Setup and supported monitoring use the TSConfig PC application through the USB connection. A USB Type-A to Type-B cable is needed for the documented connection and should be selected separately. This is not an Orion XS or an Orion-Tr Smart Bluetooth charger. Choose the converter around its actual configuration method rather than assuming every Victron charging product uses the same application or wireless features.

Plan engine detection and control

Built-in engine-running detection helps avoid draining the starter battery when the vehicle is stopped. The unit can also be activated through an appropriately configured control input. The 100A version includes the documented CAN-bus connection for supported accessories/control arrangements; it should not be treated as a general-purpose VE.Can or VRM monitoring interface. Follow the manual’s wiring and activation instructions for the specific vehicle.

Allow space for the converter and cable bends

The unit measures 288 × 162 × 95mm and weighs approximately 4.1kg. The operating range is -25°C to +60°C, with thermal current limiting as conditions require. Choose a protected mounting position with the ventilation and clearance required by the manual. Complete the ground connections in the prescribed sequence and provide external circuit protection; the manual states that the converter has no reverse-polarity protection.

What is included?

One exact ORI303100000 100A Buck-Boost converter. The starter and auxiliary batteries, alternator, installation wiring, protective devices, USB configuration cable and optional control or temperature accessories are separate. This is a charging-system component, rather than a complete vehicle electrical kit.

Choose the battery charging approach deliberately

The converter charges at a configured voltage and limits current within the selected settings and operating conditions. Do not assume an automatic multistage charging profile or compatibility with every lithium battery. A lithium system still needs its specified BMS and charge-permission arrangement. Confirm the battery requirements, charging voltage and vehicle integration before selecting equipment from the amp rating alone.
