VICTRON ENERGY
Battery Balancer for Series Battery Banks
Help keep the voltages of two series-connected 12V batteries closer during charging. The Victron Battery Balancer draws a limited current from the higher-voltage battery so a properly matched 24V lead-acid bank can charge more evenly.
Choose the number of balancers for the bank
One balancer is designed around two 12V batteries in series, forming a 24V bank. A 48V string made from four 12V batteries requires three balancers in the manufacturer’s arrangement. This listing includes one unit, not the three-unit set needed for that 48V configuration. Review the diagram for parallel strings as well as series connections.
Understand the limited balancing current
Balancing begins when the voltage difference reaches about 50mV. The unit draws up to 0.7A from the higher-voltage battery when the difference exceeds 100mV. It is intended to help manage battery-to-battery imbalance during charging, rather than to supply the charging current for the whole battery bank.
Check charging thresholds and voltage limits
The balancer turns on at approximately 27.3V, with a specified tolerance of ±1%, and turns off around 26.6V. Its maximum is 18V per battery and 36V total across each balancer. Confirm the charging profile and battery arrangement against those limits; nominal voltage alone does not describe every operating condition.
Use indicators and the alarm contact
A green LED indicates operation, orange indicators identify the balancing side and a red LED indicates an alarm. The alarm threshold is a 200mV difference and resets around 140mV. A normally open alarm relay is rated 60V/1A. An external reset button can be added separately according to the wiring instructions.
Install close to the bank in a protected location
The unit measures 100 × 113 × 47mm in height, width and depth and weighs about 0.4kg. It is rated IP22 with an operating range of -30°C to +50°C. Mount vertically in a ventilated location close to the batteries, but not directly above them where corrosive gases can collect. Screw terminals accept up to 6mm², approximately 10 AWG; select the actual wiring and protection from the manual.
Start with suitable, fully charged batteries
Balancing equipment cannot repair a defective battery or correct every consequence of mismatched age, capacity or condition. Follow the manufacturer guidance for initial charging and battery matching before putting the bank into use. Persistent imbalance deserves investigation rather than simply adding more balancing devices.
What is included?
One Victron Battery Balancer, exact SKU BBA000100100. Batteries, battery charger, cables, fuses and optional alarm-reset button are separate. For a four-battery 48V series string, select the required quantity of three individual units and follow the official connection diagram.
Is this an internal lithium cell balancer?
No. This product works between the specified series-connected batteries. It does not replace an internal cell-level BMS or make an arbitrary lithium arrangement compatible. The manufacturer’s lead-acid series-bank application and voltage limits should guide selection; confirm any other application directly before ordering.
